Abstract

My project builds upon historical studies about anti-Chinese racism and exclusion by addressing the creation of a problematic police force, the Chinatown Squad, which marked a racialized people and neighborhood for surveillance and discipline. The inauguration of the Chinatown Squad reflected important shifts in the policies of the municipal government and the San Francisco Police Department. Examining the expansion of the police force in the name of public safety alongside the municipally-directed policing of a racialized neighborhood will complicate our historical understanding of anti-Chinese rhetoric and violence.
